Hello!
I'm Amanda and I am a passionate music educator with more than 16 years of teaching experience.
My formal education includes a Masters degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Calgary and Level 1 Kodaly Music Certification from the University of Alberta.
I've had some great performance experiences, including playing the title roles in Handel's opera Serse and Humperdink's opera Hansel and Gretel. I have also performed as a soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Calgary Civic Symphony, been a roster artist with Cowtown Opera and sung with a lot of Alberta's choirs, including Pro Coro, Calgary Festival Chorus, Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and the Calgary Youth Choir.
Much as I enjoy performing, I really love teaching! Throughout my music education I always got excited over the technique and art of singing and teaching. I find joy in learning how our bodies are put together to make sound, and finding strategies to help singers discover their voices. I believe that singing is a whole body experience and one of my biggest strengths is that I can hear tension in singers voices, identify which part (or parts) of the body are causing the tension and create exercises that will help address the tension. After about 6 weeks of lessons most of my students find that their voices feel stronger, they are experiencing less vocal fatigue and their range has increased.
Former students have gone on to attend universities and colleges throughout Canada, participate in both amateur and professional musical theatre productions, and perform with bands and choirs.
Lessons include a mixture of warmups, technique and repertoire and are always customized to the students goals and interests. I trained as a classical singer but teach many genres of music, including musical theatre, pop, rock and country. I have extensive training and experience teaching students of all ages.
All lessons currently take place online through Zoom. Once your registration has been confirmed instructions will be sent to you. Beginning in the fall of 2021 the opportunity for occasional in person lessons will be offered at a location TBA, but the majority of lessons will be online. This allows me to keep my rates lower and provide more flexibility in scheduling.
In addition to being a voice teacher, I am also a trained early childhood music educator. I teach private piano lessons for beginners and both group and private classes for young children. Students and parents say that our lessons are fun and engaging and often a highlight of their week.
Outside of teaching voice and piano, I teach early childhood music classes at the Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music, am the choir director at Hillhurst United Church, and am an active choral clinician throughout Calgary. I am also a Mom to three young children and love spending my spare time at the Zoo and exploring the playgrounds and parks in Calgary.
